BTMA and Cotton Connect Limited (CCUK) Sign MoU to Promote Domestic Cotton

Production, Sustainable Supply Chain and Market Linkages.

Bangladesh Textile Mills Association (BTMA) and Cotton Connect Limited (CCUK) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 06 May 2026 at the BTMA Gulshan Office to promote domestic cotton production, develop a sustainable and traceable cotton supply chain and strengthen market linkages for locally produced cotton.

The meeting was led by Mr. Showkat Aziz Russell, Honorable President of BTMA while Ms. Alison Ward, Chief Executive Officer of Cotton Connect Limited led the CCUK delegation.

During the meeting, the parties discussed key issues relating to the development of Bangladesh’s cotton sector, including the Government’s target to produce 0.5 million bales of cotton by 2030, the existing La/o tax at source on the supply of domestic cotton to export-oriented industries, and other policy-related challenges affecting the sector. BTMA strongly urged the Government to withdraw the existing tax at source on cotton to encourage local cotton production and utilization. Under the MoU, BTMA and Cotton Connect Limited will collaborate in areas including domestic cotton production, regenerative farming practices, traceability systems, ESG reporting, capacity building, policy advocacy and international cotton supply chain linkages.

The meeting observed that increased domestic cotton production would reduce import dependency, shorten production lead time, save foreign currency and enhance the confidence and interest of international buyers in Bangladesh’s textile and apparel sector.

On behalf of BTMA, Honorable Directors Mr. Mohd. Khorshed Alam, Mr. Syed Enayat Kabir and Mr. Rubaiyat Haider attended the meeting. From Cotton Connect Limited (CCUK), Mr. Abou Bakar, Country Representative for Bangladesh and Pakistan and Dr. Farid Uddin, Consultant were also present.
